Profile: Matthew Cina, Premise, Inc.

Overview of Matt’s journey
Matt Cina describes himself as a lifelong learner. His desire to learn more and do more has driven him to lead two businesses. A master electrician from age 25, Matt worked his way up from the ground floor to a leadership role at Black & Veatch, a global engineering, consulting and construction company specializing in infrastructure development, before leaving the company in 2003 to start his first business, Mill City TEC, which he helped grow from a business of one to over 130 employees before selling in 2014.

Now, Matt is focused on redefining renewable energy in his current business, Premise Inc., a Midwest-based construction company that specializes in building communication and power solutions for future-focused customers.

Matt is always looking to go further. He joined CEO Nexus to help him fulfill his ownership journey.

The roundtable experience

Matt joined a CEO Nexus roundtable group in 2019 and had such a positive experience, he encouraged his business partner, Karl Kussow, to join another CEO Nexus roundtable group the following year.

Premise benefits from having two members of the leadership team take part in different roundtable discussions because they can gather more perspectives from other CEO Nexus members and share insights from their conversations. This has been invaluable for Matt and his team as they work through complicated situations in their mission to grow the business. It’s even led to some breakthrough moments.

“Joining a roundtable with like-minded people has been incredibly beneficial. The ability to share things with a group of peers who listen, ask questions to try to draw out the real issues, and provide feedback is a great advantage. It’s amazing how often you have a light bulb or breakthrough moments listening to your peers share their perspective.”

A self-proclaimed habitual note-taker who’s always looking to learn more, Matt has also found great value in the presentations at CEO Nexus events.

“There are best-in-class speakers that come in and give presentations that are full of great content. Whether the topic is finance, risk, human resources, marketing or operations all of the presentations are about things we need to hear as leaders.”

One of the many useful presentations from subject matter experts included learning about the operational system EOS®/Traction. After conducting further research and meeting with his leadership team, Matt decided to adopt the EOS® system.

Utilizing CEO Nexus partners to further success — Arkona

Also important to Matt’s journey was the introduction to the Intentional Growth Academy™, which acts as a natural complement to the CEO Nexus ownership journey platform by teaching business owners how to view – and run – their company like a financial asset. Going through the academy led Matt to hire Arkona for its fractional CFO service to help Premise focus on the right type of growth.

“The Arkona program materials made me think, “What do I want out of this business besides just wanting to grow something?” Matt explained, “It’s helped me reframe my thinking and evaluate what I want to get out of my business, whether it’s a big paycheck or a legacy or something else entirely.”

Matt and Karl found that they want to grow equity valuation in Premise, so they have options to do what they want with the business long-term. After hiring a fractional CFO and integrating them into their leadership team’s meetings, Matt said that Premise is actually saving money and getting better results.

The position has also created a culture of accountability within the company and allowed Matt to focus on pursuing growth in other areas of the business.

Applying lessons learned from his previous business

Premise Inc. has an indoor cell tower used for training.

Now on his second business, Matt’s found that applying the knowledge from his first ownership experience has allowed Premise to go further, faster.

“Each business is unique and has a different culture and trajectory. You still have to go through the same processes, but it’s faster the second time around. Part of the reason I sold the first business is that we were hitting a ceiling and I didn’t know how to break through it. I think with the Premise, we’ve hit the same ceiling and we hit it quicker, but this time we learned how to scale.”

Being a part of a group of like-minded people that help expose your blind spots makes you aware of where you need to level up as a leader.

“I would recommend CEO Nexus to other second-stage business owners. I can’t stress how invaluable it’s been. And building a network that I can go to and ask questions when I get stuck not only helps me get a fresh perspective when coming up with solutions but reminds me that I’m not alone and provides support.”
